Political Comedy

Someone once asked me when comedy became political.

My answer: “Two and a half millennia ago the Athenian general and leading politician Cleon brought an apparently unsuccessful case against Aristophanes, the author of the oldest surviving Western comedy plays, for supposedly slandering the Athenians in his lost play Babylonians. Following this, Cleon frequently appeared in Aristophanes’ plays as the target of comedic ridicule. It’s unknown if earlier comedic playwrights were also political so I’m going to say ‘From the start'”

You can also say that attempts to silence comedians were there from the start.

Lightning Storm

Outdoor performing tip: When the thunder claps, take a bow.

[[With this post, A Joke A Day ends its daily run. 280 posts, but Mastodon changed its picture formatting so I needed to redo all the post images and restart, then Instagram changed its picture format so I needed to redo those, then the World continued its transformation into something that doesn’t inspire new jokes in me so I’m taking a break.]]

[[Meanwhile I’m continuing with my attempts at zine making. As I write this I don’t know if I intend my zines to be funny or political or whatever. My next one will be a sarcastic jab at conspiracy theories, I’m also thinking of making a second, more realistic conspiracy theory plus some photos of wild and non-wild flowers over the last month with the DEATH jokes reprised with maybe 6 or 7 new jokes to make a 32 page booklet or trimmed to make a 16 page booklet, after that, who knows?]]

[[After doing the these planned zines, my planned posting schedule is twice a month for 16 page zines or weekly for 8 page zines which comes to roughly a page a day]]
